On the last day of April, when Steam for Mac was originally set to get its public release, Valve announced that there was a delay and to expect the client on May 12. Fast-forward this story nearly two weeks and you end up on today — the zero hour of a real, actual gaming service on Apple computers.

Now that the servers are live and you can download the Mac client (here), we’re getting lots of mixed reports. Some would-be Mac gamers are reporting that they’re still getting the message that Steam for Mac is still in beta, while others aren’t having any trouble accessing and downloading their account and games. If we know anything about a Valve launch, it’s that it is going to be a rocky ride. Servers will crash, delays will go unannounced, and news will be scattered and inconsistent. All we can say is to just hang in there and eventually things will level out and you’ll be gaming on your Mac before you know it.

[update] It seems that the floodgates have opened and all accounts are now granted access, but the store pages and news pages are still reflecting that the client is in beta. It’s also worth mentioning that Valve haven’t officially announced anything as of yet.

[update2] Valve just pushed out a client update for the Windows version of Steam that includes Win32 support for Steam Play on “upcoming Mac titles.”
